Words that rhyme with Ability

Take ability apart phonetically and the bones are these: four-syllable, vowel on the high /ɪ/, ending that opens out at the end. Pair it with something tactile and the line lifts. The headline counts: strict rhymes are scarce, the family-rhyme classifier finds nothing, and the slant pool, matched on vowel alone, is huge. The lyric headline: it works as a concept word. When strict matches feel exhausted, the assonance column is where you go fishing.

Why ability rhymes the way it does

In our engine, ability registers as a four-syllable word on the short /ɪ/ (/ɪ/) that doesn't close on a consonant at all. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 13 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 109, assonance 11,986, and consonance 283. The empty family column matters less than it looks. Family rhymes are a strict-classifier construct; the songwriter's ear accepts most assonance matches in their place. The songwriter's move is to pick a small set of strict rhymes for the chorus and open up to family and assonance through the verses. Ability rewards slant rhyming because the strict pool, when over-used, calls attention to itself.
