Words that rhyme with Arbitrary

Arbitrary works as a plain-speech anchor on the lyric side and four-syllable the short /ษช/ on the sound side โ€” it ends on an open vowel at the close. Its everydayness lets the song surprise around it. Engine returns: the strict-rhyme well runs deep, the family-rhyme bucket is bare, the vowel-only slant pool is deep enough to write a whole album from. Lyric returns: a plain-speech anchor. Use the strict rhymes for the structural beats and let slant rhymes do the interior work.

Why arbitrary rhymes the way it does

The phonology of arbitrary is a four-syllable core: the short /ษช/ (/ษช/), then it ends on an open vowel. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 167 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 71, assonance 7,192, and consonance 702. That's a deep perfect column. The song can ride strict rhymes from end to end, only sliding into assonance when the line needs to surprise. What matters when you're writing: the ear forgives slants in service of meaning. If the strict rhyme is the predictable word, the assonance match will usually hit harder. Arbitrary is a word where the slant choice almost always reads as more thoughtful than the obvious end-rhyme.
