Words that rhyme with Ave

Sound and sense both matter for ave. The sound: two-syllable, vowel on the flat /รฆ/, ending that trails off into a fricative. The sense: a stop-by-stop-grocery-shelf word. Common words like this gain weight from the company they keep on the line. From the rhyme-data side: the perfect column comes up empty, family-rhyme territory comes up dry, and the assonance well is bottomless. From the lyric side, it works as a plain-speech anchor. Reach for the assonance list whenever the strict pool starts repeating itself.

Why ave rhymes the way it does

In our engine, ave registers as a two-syllable word on the flat /รฆ/ (/รฆ/) that tails through a fricative. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 0 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 39, assonance 5,641, and consonance 309. That's a narrow strict column with a very deep slant well beneath it. Modern songwriting reads those slants as rhymes; the ear has been trained on them for a century. Practical: skim the strict column first and pick the two or three matches you can sing without thinking. Then move to assonance for the in-between lines. Ave reads as more memorable when the strict matches are reserved for the line endings that matter most.
