Words that rhyme with Contention

Most songwriters treat contention as an idea-word, but the phonology underneath matters: three-syllable, vowel on the centred /ษ›/, ending that trails through a nasal hum. Abstract words like this work best when the surrounding line is sensory. The slant pool is enormous on the vowel side, no family-rhyme matches turn up, and the perfect-rhyme list is short. Look up rhymes for contention and you'll get a particular story: the pull is toward slant work. The slant column is doing the heavy lifting; let it.

Why contention rhymes the way it does

Contention is three-syllable, its rhyme-relevant vowel sitting on the centred /ษ›/, then it lets the nasal carry the tail. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 26 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 58, assonance 10,997, and consonance 7. The empty family column matters less than it looks. Family rhymes are a strict-classifier construct; the songwriter's ear accepts most assonance matches in their place. Writing-tip: don't end every line with the strict rhyme. Use the slant columns at the joints and the strict matches at the seams. Contention works hardest when the slant carries the verse and the strict match closes the chorus.
