Words that rhyme with Double

You can read double two ways: as a household-word, or as a two-syllable shape on the wide /aสŠ/ that ends on a liquid that pulls the line forward. Common words like this gain weight from the company they keep on the line. Engine returns: strict matches show up in low numbers, family rhymes come up empty, the assonance bucket is the workhorse here. Lyric returns: a word the lyric earns weight from by context. Modern lyric writing on this word lives almost entirely in the assonance pool.

Why double rhymes the way it does

In our engine, double registers as a two-syllable word on the /aสŠ/ diphthong (/aสŠ/) that trails through a flowing liquid. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 10 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 45, assonance 3,455, and consonance 136. The empty family column matters less than it looks. Family rhymes are a strict-classifier construct; the songwriter's ear accepts most assonance matches in their place. Practical: skim the strict column first and pick the two or three matches you can sing without thinking. Then move to assonance for the in-between lines. Double reads as more memorable when the strict matches are reserved for the line endings that matter most.
