Words that rhyme with Fence

Map fence onto a phonological grid and you get: one-syllable, the front /ษ›/, ending that trails off into a fricative. Lyrically, it reads as a word the songwriter reaches for when the line needs scaffolding. Pair it with something tactile and the line lifts. What the engine returns: perfect matches come in a small handful, family rhymes give you a small but useful slant pool, and the slant pool is enormous on the vowel side. Lyric-wise, the word reads as a non-image word. Reach for assonance first; the strict list is the safety net underneath it.

Why fence rhymes the way it does

Pull fence apart phonetically and you get a one-syllable word with the short /ษ›/ (/ษ›/) as the rhyme-bearing vowel; the close softens into a fricative tail. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 29 matches, family rhymes 5, additive and subtractive together 105, assonance 12,367, and consonance 182. The mix gives you options across the board. Strict rhymes for the structural beats, family or assonance for the interior lines. Writing-tip: don't end every line with the strict rhyme. Use the slant columns at the joints and the strict matches at the seams. Fence works hardest when the slant carries the verse and the strict match closes the chorus.
