Words that rhyme with Fiction

Most songwriters treat fiction as a thinking-word, but the phonology underneath matters: two-syllable, vowel on the short /ษ›/, ending that trails through a nasal hum. Songs that use it well also reach for something physical nearby. Sketch the rhyme pool and you get the perfect column gives you just enough to start, family rhymes come up empty, and the assonance well is bottomless. Sketch the lyric role and you get an idea-word looking for a body. Let the assonance column shape the verse; the strict matches can punctuate it.

Why fiction rhymes the way it does

Fiction is built around the front /ษ›/ (/ษ™/); it's two-syllable and trails through a nasal hum. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 17 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 53, assonance 11,752, and consonance 41. The empty family column matters less than it looks. Family rhymes are a strict-classifier construct; the songwriter's ear accepts most assonance matches in their place. The songwriter's move is to pick a small set of strict rhymes for the chorus and open up to family and assonance through the verses. Fiction rewards slant rhyming because the strict pool, when over-used, calls attention to itself.
