On the page, greedy is an unguarded everyday word; on the ear it's a two-syllable word on the clipped /ɪ/ that doesn't close on a consonant at all. It's an unremarkable word until the verse asks it to do something. From the rhyme-data side: the perfect pool is workable but compact, no near-perfect family slants exist for this one, and the slant pool is enormous on the vowel side. From the lyric side, it works as a household-word. Modern lyric writing on this word lives almost entirely in the assonance pool.

Why greedy rhymes the way it does
Greedy is two-syllable, its rhyme-relevant vowel sitting on the high /ɪ/, then it doesn't close on a consonant at all. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 19 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 142, assonance 4,577, and consonance 758. The empty family column matters less than it looks. Family rhymes are a strict-classifier construct; the songwriter's ear accepts most assonance matches in their place. Writing-tip: don't end every line with the strict rhyme. Use the slant columns at the joints and the strict matches at the seams. Greedy works hardest when the slant carries the verse and the strict match closes the chorus.
