Words that rhyme with Meter

There's a particular shape to meter: two-syllable, built on the /ษœหr/ that mid-Atlantic ears class as one vowel, ending that trails through a flowing liquid. Its everydayness lets the song surprise around it. Take the rhyme counts on their own terms: strict matches show up in low numbers, family rhymes come up empty, the assonance count climbs into the thousands. Take the lyric role separately and it's a stop-by-stop-grocery-shelf word. Reach for the assonance list whenever the strict pool starts repeating itself.

Why meter rhymes the way it does

Meter sits on the r-coloured schwa, transcribed /ษœหr/ in our engine, and spills out through a liquid consonant. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 25 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 159, assonance 4,551, and consonance 919. The empty family column matters less than it looks. Family rhymes are a strict-classifier construct; the songwriter's ear accepts most assonance matches in their place. How to use it: hold the strict matches for the moments the listener expects, and use the slants to surprise where they don't. Meter pairs especially well with assonance because the vowel column is deeper than the consonant column.
