Words that rhyme with Mold

Most songwriters treat mold as a word the lyric earns weight from by context, but the phonology underneath matters: one-syllable, vowel on the round /ษ’/, ending that shuts cleanly on a stopped consonant. Common words like this gain weight from the company they keep on the line. Sketch the rhyme pool and you get there are a few perfect rhymes, no more, nothing lands in the family-rhyme column, and the slant-by-vowel pool is enormous. Sketch the lyric role and you get a plain-speech anchor. Assonance is where the modern songwriting toolkit lives for this one.

Why mold rhymes the way it does

In our engine, mold registers as a one-syllable word on the round /ษ’/ (/ษ’/) that lands on a stopped consonant. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 49 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 202, assonance 6,620, and consonance 235. The empty family column matters less than it looks. Family rhymes are a strict-classifier construct; the songwriter's ear accepts most assonance matches in their place. What matters when you're writing: the ear forgives slants in service of meaning. If the strict rhyme is the predictable word, the assonance match will usually hit harder. Mold is a word where the slant choice almost always reads as more thoughtful than the obvious end-rhyme.
