Words that rhyme with Motif

Motif: two-syllable, a plain-speech anchor, vowel sitting on the clipped /ษช/, ending that softens into a fricative tail. It's a word everyone uses โ€” which is what makes it powerful in a lyric. Songwriters reach for it as a stop-by-stop-grocery-shelf word. The strict-rhyme well runs deep, the family column is blank, and the slant pool, matched on vowel alone, is huge. Lean on the strict column for the hooks; the slants can colour the verses.

Why motif rhymes the way it does

Motif is two-syllable, its rhyme-relevant vowel sitting on the tight /ษช/, then it ends in a hissed consonant. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 59 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 156, assonance 3,462, and consonance 177. That's a deep perfect column. The song can ride strict rhymes from end to end, only sliding into assonance when the line needs to surprise. Writing-tip: don't end every line with the strict rhyme. Use the slant columns at the joints and the strict matches at the seams. Motif works hardest when the slant carries the verse and the strict match closes the chorus.
