Words that rhyme with Naught

Most songwriters treat naught as a household-word, but the phonology underneath matters: one-syllable, vowel on the open /ษ”ห/, ending that lands on a closed syllable. Plain-speech words like this earn weight through context. Its job in a lyric is a stop-by-stop-grocery-shelf word, holding down whatever line it lands in. When a songwriter asks what rhymes with naught, the pool tells a specific story: perfect rhymes are thin on the ground, family-rhyme territory comes up dry, and the assonance bucket is the workhorse here. Lean on assonance and the song will sound contemporary, not catalogued.

Why naught rhymes the way it does

Naught is one-syllable, its rhyme-relevant vowel sitting on the open /ษ”ห/, then it lands on a stopped consonant. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 43 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 34, assonance 7,313, and consonance 860. The empty family column matters less than it looks. Family rhymes are a strict-classifier construct; the songwriter's ear accepts most assonance matches in their place. In the room with a guitar: write toward the strict rhyme first, then go back through and replace the obvious ones with the assonance matches that earned their place. Naught is a word that benefits from the second pass.
