Words that rhyme with Pause

Most songwriters treat pause as a workaday word, but the phonology underneath matters: one-syllable, vowel on the open /ษ”ห/, ending that spills into a fricative. Plain-speech words like this earn weight through context. From the rhyme-data side: the perfect-rhyme list is short, no family rhymes survive the strict family test, and the slant pool is enormous on the vowel side. From the lyric side, it works as a low-register anchor. The slant pool is huge enough that you'll never need to repeat a rhyme.

Why pause rhymes the way it does

Pause is built around the broad /ษ”ห/ (/ษ”ห/); it's one-syllable and ends in a hissed consonant. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 42 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 33, assonance 6,905, and consonance 632. The empty family column matters less than it looks. Family rhymes are a strict-classifier construct; the songwriter's ear accepts most assonance matches in their place. How to use it: hold the strict matches for the moments the listener expects, and use the slants to surprise where they don't. Pause pairs especially well with assonance because the vowel column is deeper than the consonant column.
