Words that rhyme with Rubbing

You can read rubbing two ways: as a low-register anchor, or as a two-syllable shape on the short /ɪ/ that hums to a nasal close. The lyric earns it by placement, not by selection. Pool data: only a handful of strict perfect rhymes survive, the family-rhyme classifier finds nothing, and the vowel-only slant column is the deepest of the five. Its function in a song, meanwhile, is to act as a word the lyric earns weight from by context. Use the assonance pool freely; the ear treats most of those matches as rhymes.

Why rubbing rhymes the way it does

In our engine, rubbing registers as a two-syllable word on the high /ɪ/ (/ɪ/) that rings out through a nasal. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 7 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 47, assonance 4,480, and consonance 34. That's a narrow strict column with a very deep slant well beneath it. Modern songwriting reads those slants as rhymes; the ear has been trained on them for a century. The songwriter's move is to pick a small set of strict rhymes for the chorus and open up to family and assonance through the verses. Rubbing rewards slant rhyming because the strict pool, when over-used, calls attention to itself.
