Words that rhyme with Skimming

There's a particular shape to skimming: two-syllable, built on the clipped /ษช/, ending that lets the nasal carry the tail. Its everydayness lets the song surprise around it. Songwriters reach for it as a common-tongue word. Only a handful of strict perfect rhymes survive, family rhymes round out the strict column, and the assonance options multiply into the thousands. Treat family rhymes as a continuation of the strict column rather than as slant matches.

How songwriters use these rhymes

Perfect rhymes
She kept her skimming close, and her brimming closer.
Family rhymes
The skimming in the line, the binning at the end of it โ€” same vowel, different door.
Additive & subtractive
Skimming alone, trimmings in the chorus โ€” the song builds the consonant in.
Assonance
Skimming on the upbeat, bidding on the down โ€” the slant does the work.
Consonance
Inside the line, skimming echoes aiming on consonant alone.

Why skimming rhymes the way it does

Pull skimming apart phonetically and you get a two-syllable word with the clipped /ษช/ (/ษช/) as the rhyme-bearing vowel; the close ends on a humming nasal. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 5 matches, family rhymes 25, additive and subtractive together 50, assonance 10,443, and consonance 94. The mix gives you options across the board. Strict rhymes for the structural beats, family or assonance for the interior lines. In practice: start at the top of the perfect column, scan family next, and reach for the assonance pool when the strict matches feel worn. A lyric that uses only strict rhymes for skimming tends to read as dated; the contemporary ear forgives โ€” and often prefers โ€” the slant.
