Words that rhyme with Staple

You can read staple two ways: as a common-tongue word, or as a two-syllable shape on the short /æ/ that ends on a liquid that pulls the line forward. The lyric earns it by placement, not by selection. From the rhyme-data side: only a handful of strict perfect rhymes survive, the family-rhyme classifier finds nothing, and the assonance column dwarfs the others. From the lyric side, it works as a common-tongue word. Lean on assonance and the song will sound contemporary, not catalogued.

Why staple rhymes the way it does

Pull staple apart phonetically and you get a two-syllable word with a low-front /æ/ (/æ/) as the rhyme-bearing vowel; the close spills out through a liquid consonant. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 18 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 230, assonance 5,388, and consonance 46. The empty family column matters less than it looks. Family rhymes are a strict-classifier construct; the songwriter's ear accepts most assonance matches in their place. Writing-tip: don't end every line with the strict rhyme. Use the slant columns at the joints and the strict matches at the seams. Staple works hardest when the slant carries the verse and the strict match closes the chorus.
