Why tofu rhymes the way it does

Pull tofu apart phonetically and you get a two-syllable word with the unrounded /สŒ/ (/สŒ/) as the rhyme-bearing vowel; the close doesn't close on a consonant at all. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 0 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 99, assonance 3,378, and consonance 177. That's a narrow strict column with a very deep slant well beneath it. Modern songwriting reads those slants as rhymes; the ear has been trained on them for a century. Writing-tip: don't end every line with the strict rhyme. Use the slant columns at the joints and the strict matches at the seams. Tofu works hardest when the slant carries the verse and the strict match closes the chorus.
