Words that rhyme with Vivid

For lyric work, vivid behaves as a word everyone uses. Sound-wise: two-syllable, vowel on the short /ɪ/, finally it closes on a hard stop. Its everydayness lets the song surprise around it. Songwriters reach for it as a quotidian anchor. Perfect rhymes simply aren't available, family-rhyme territory comes up dry, and the assonance pool runs into the thousands. The slant pool is huge enough that you'll never need to repeat a rhyme.

Why vivid rhymes the way it does

Pull vivid apart phonetically and you get a two-syllable word with the short /ɪ/ (/ɪ/) as the rhyme-bearing vowel; the close closes on a hard stop. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 3 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 28, assonance 11,409, and consonance 98. That's a narrow strict column with a very deep slant well beneath it. Modern songwriting reads those slants as rhymes; the ear has been trained on them for a century. Practical: skim the strict column first and pick the two or three matches you can sing without thinking. Then move to assonance for the in-between lines. Vivid reads as more memorable when the strict matches are reserved for the line endings that matter most.
