Words that rhyme with Duty

For lyric work, duty behaves as a word the lyric earns weight from by context. Sound-wise: two-syllable, vowel on the short /ɪ/, finally it ends on an unbuttoned vowel. Its everydayness lets the song surprise around it. Engine returns: the perfect-rhyme list is short, nothing lands in the family-rhyme column, the assonance pool runs into the thousands. Lyric returns: a workaday word. Let the assonance column shape the verse; the strict matches can punctuate it.

Why duty rhymes the way it does

Pull duty apart phonetically and you get a two-syllable word with the tight /ɪ/ (/ɪ/) as the rhyme-bearing vowel; the close leaves the vowel hanging open. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 17 matches, family rhymes 0, additive and subtractive together 141, assonance 3,561, and consonance 1004. The empty family column matters less than it looks. Family rhymes are a strict-classifier construct; the songwriter's ear accepts most assonance matches in their place. Practical: skim the strict column first and pick the two or three matches you can sing without thinking. Then move to assonance for the in-between lines. Duty reads as more memorable when the strict matches are reserved for the line endings that matter most.
