Words that rhyme with Reject

You can read reject two ways: as a workaday word, or as a two-syllable shape on the short /ษ›/ that lands on a closed syllable. Its everydayness lets the song surprise around it. The headline counts: the perfect-rhyme column is well-stocked, the family-rhyme list hands over a few solid slants, and the slant pool, matched on vowel alone, is huge. The lyric headline: it works as a stop-by-stop-grocery-shelf word. Start strict, scan family, and only reach for assonance when the line wants slant.

Why reject rhymes the way it does

Reject is two-syllable, its rhyme-relevant vowel sitting on the short /ษ›/, then it snaps shut on a stop. In our 54,000-word dictionary the perfect-rhyme pool returns 51 matches, family rhymes 3, additive and subtractive together 145, assonance 11,603, and consonance 243. That's a deep perfect column. The song can ride strict rhymes from end to end, only sliding into assonance when the line needs to surprise. What matters when you're writing: the ear forgives slants in service of meaning. If the strict rhyme is the predictable word, the assonance match will usually hit harder. Reject is a word where the slant choice almost always reads as more thoughtful than the obvious end-rhyme.
